Uncle for photographer????
My Uncle, not a professional photographer bought a fancy camera and has offered to take the photos for our big day. We are on a tight budget. Should I have him be our photographer? Why or why not?

There are many affordable photographers to choose from. My advise would be to not skimp on this very important part of your wedding. Plus it puts a lot of pressure on this relative, especially if they don’t turn out quite right.
Ed is right; This is a very special moment that you will look back and remember for the rest of your life. I had a friend of a friend that is a “professional photographer” but he’d never done a wedding. His work was not what I expected and was not what he said it would be, I’d recommend you find a wedding photographer that’s local that way you’ll have time to talk to him or her about your photo sessions.
Have a wonderfull wedding and good luck.
In my opinion as a photographer, it would depend on if it’s a film or digital camera. Assuming it’s digital, you can instantly preview the images and make quick adjustments. Because there is no charge with your uncle (at least I hope not) I would purchase extra flash (memory) cards for him and tell him to shoot away. If he takes 300 photos, both posed and non-posed, you will by sheer odds come up with some decent (even great)shots. Remember, for all the posed shots, your the director. Now, if it’s a film camera I would be quite hesitant. I guess at that point I would base the decision on his former photographs….Good Luck, Lou.
First of all, does he take good photos? There are people who have a natural talent for it. A lot of these people get started with relatives. How is your relationship with this uncle? Will it cause major problems in the family if you turn him down, or if the photos he takes are not good? As important as your wedding is, so is your relationship with family. If you do not trust he can do it, you had better talk to him. My daughter and I took my son’s wedding photos, and they turned out memorable. They were good, because we knew them well.
There are lots of photographers out there that may have done fashion or product that are looking to get into weddings but need a portfolio before they can start charging up to their talent level. Sit down with them and tell them what are the most important shots (within reason)then have tell him to have fun. You will be amazed at what you might get.
Wedding Photograhy is not for amatures and unfortunately, your uncle is one. Just remember the images that usually go from generation to generation are the Matriarchs on their wedding day.
